It tells the reader so much about the films concept, characters, weapons and general universe detail. Remember in the absolute original timeline there was no John Connor and so on. The war happenend in the 1980s. And Skynet was developed using existing technology in the 1970s or 1980s probably. The original Terminator (1984), happens in an altered timeline. This is a bit late to the party, but not long ago, I was able to get my hands on one of the plasma rifle props used on The Sarah Connor Chronicles. If one watches the first film again, they'll notice that the human Resistance soldiers were also armed with conventional firearms like the Franchi SPAS-12, the Heckler & Koch G3 battle rifle in 7.62mm NATO, and the IMI Uzi. My guess is that Tech-Com didn't have enough M25 and M30 plasma rifles to equip all human Resistance forces so old-school slugthrowers in the .30 calibre range like the G3, the FN FAL and the M14 would still be used by human forces. In addition, these particular rifles make excellent anti-Terminator weapons as 7.62mm NATO packs a lot more punch than 5.56mm NATO.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-726484495782035142.post-19839198142544680992018-07-09T01:58:34.148-05:002018-07-09T01:58:34.148-05:00Thanks! Kudos to the extensive research done.

As a kid in New Zealand I grew up watching a BBC sci-fi TV series called Blake's 7, created by the masterful Terry Nation responsible for the Daleks from Dr Who. The show ran from 1978 to 1981 and intially focused on Roj Blake, a politcal dissident who rebels against the brutal Terran Federation with a small cadre of misfits. The SFX were typical BBC for the era, but the show's true strength lay in its gritty storytelling. Definitely MSF and worthy of a mention.Alan J. Today ...I've the answer for this 40Watt issue.

Today in our world we count the energetic value of food & beverage in calories.

This unit, the calorie, is in fact an energy unit. When U see soda can labeled as 200 calories it really contains 200,000 calories of energy or 200 Kilo-calories (200Kcal).

Similar thing could have been would happening (it’s a new tense, alternative continues past) in the Terminator timeline – few years before judgment day (1997) American soldiers/law-enforcers/citizens get their hands on plasma weaponry and the terminology have been would changing from caliber to power output.
Those Americans emitted the Kilos from Kilowatts the same way they did to calories and for the same reason and kept the Watt unit to indicate weapon firepower.

Those soldiers/law-enforcers/citizens how survived judgment day been the first resistance fighters against Skynet. To infiltrate to their strongholds, Skynet had to research the resistance fighter vocabulary and program its infiltration units with it.
The T-101 sent back in time was a standard infiltration unit so that why it asked the gun shop owner for 'phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range' – that what a citizen in alternative 1996 would have asked when wanting to buy a plasma rifle!

Yoel Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-726484495782035142.post-7199667244533268912018-06-15T19:30:13.427-05:002018-06-15T19:30:13.427-05:00Otherwise a great article but I don't buy that...Otherwise a great article but I don't buy that 40 watt could be shortened form of 40 kilowatts because the kilo has very specific purpose so leaving that out completely change the meaning.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-726484495782035142.post-79438581858293456022018-06-15T00:56:25.857-05:002018-06-15T00:56:25.857-05:00Great article, way more lore than I ever expected....Great article, way more lore than I ever expected. Always been a fan of how Cameron portrayed the DEW in Terminater, treating the plasma bolts like tracers gives it a almost real world feel vs the many Star Wars like blasters we often see in movies. The non-Cameron Terminators seem to lack that authenticity, the man is simply gifted when it comes to sci-fi visuals.

Steel Ravenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07033636526460614949noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-726484495782035142.post-14764949451774932262018-06-14T00:09:19.776-05:002018-06-14T00:09:19.776-05:00Other than the 40 watt phased plasma gun nonsense....Other than the 40 watt phased plasma gun nonsense. I always loved the M95 ...Love the Work on this one. I always loved the M95 Plasma rifle. but was way more interested in the Terminator itself. I mean How do you graft a full body skin graft on to a machine. Where do you get the skin? I always wondered if Skynet like Dr. Mengela before it was selecting some humans for use as possible Skins for Terminator units. It also would have made sense for the Machines to build different Skulls, and body types. I mean you might be able to infiltrate maybe a dozen Arny units but if all the Terminators look like Arny. The Humans are going to figure it out. So you want variation in your Terminators Which is where Summer Glau's T950 made a lot of sense.
